Equine
Art Show and Gallery Sale
Once
again the Fall Classic Breeders' Sale will host the added
attraction of an Equine Art Show and Gallery Sale. Equine
artists were invited to submit work for consideration
for use as the poster and catalog cover artwork. The Committee
received many wonderful submissions, making the choice
very difficult. Selected pieces from the submitted artwork
will be displayed for your enjoyment and offered for sale
at the Fall Classic Breeders' Sale venue.
We
will adhere to the tradition of selling the original artwork
used for the poster and sale catalog cover as Lot 0 of
the auction on Sunday. Many additional and equally marvelous
pieces of art have been submitted by our participating
artists and will be on display and priced to sell. All
artwork is framed and ready to hang. To purchase one of
the pieces, simply visit the sale office. A portion of
the proceeds from all of the art sales is contributed
to the support of the CWHBA Alberta Chapter. We encourage
you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to
purchase work from some of Canada's premier equine artists
and support our organization.
The
contributing artists make this show possible and we extend
to them our thanks. We hope you agree that the Art Show
and Gallery Sale creates another dimension to the prestige
and elegance created at the Fall Classic Breeders' Sale.
The
Artists
Donna
Bernstein Lakefork, Idaho
(208) 634-2418
Donna Bernstein creates highly expressive contemporary
equine art in asian-inspired inks, acrylic canvases, bronze
sculptures. Her large-scale series "Cave Paintings"
honors the original cave artists and their own primal
fascination with the equine form. The first of these,
"Blue Cloud", was featured in the Official Program
of Equitana Brisbane, Australia, 2002. "Buck"
is a celebrated bronze created for the internationally-acclaimed
Therapeutic Riding Program of the National Ability Center,
Park City, Utah, and was featured in "Equine Vision"
magazine in September, 2001. The abstract "Purple
Paint" was chosen commemorative art of the Western
Idaho Horse Fair, February 2000. Currently, her new sculpture
"Gosling" is being featured both in "Horses
& Art" magazine, as well as at the J. Whitney
Fine Art Gallery in Southington, Ct., along with "Buck",
who is also featured at The Narrow Space Gallery, Tipperary,
Ireland. Donna is a member of the distinguished Equine
Art Guild, the Equine Studies Institute of California,

and public collections. Many of her pieces are available
as Limited Edition Giclee Prints. Donna invites you to
visit her at www.RunningWindArt.com. True to form, Donna's
sense of expression reveals a dynamic yet subtle affinity
between woman and horse, and her own unique connection
to those that run with the wind.
Tina Bradshaw Collingwood, Ontario
(705) 446-1880
Canadian realism artist Tina Bradshaw began to record
her love of nature and the outdoors at an early age. Her
passion for wildlife and horses inspired her to paint
equine images. Tina's background in illustration and design
gave her the basis to create her high realism paintings.
Tina's creative sense of color, reflective light and strong
design are visually recognizable in her unique personal
style. She can work in a variety of mediums, but prefers
acrylic on canvas because of the flexibility and vibrancy
of color. Her body of work consists mainly of wildlife,
equine and fine sporting art. Her originals, limited edition
prints, and canvas transfers have been sold to private
collectors across Canada and the United States. Currently,
she works from her studio doing corporate and private
commissions.
Bev
Clark Port Elgin, Ontario
(519) 389-4561
From as early as she can remember, Bev Clark has had two
constant passions in her life: horses - with their indomitable
spirit and grace - and the need to capture every nuance
of that beauty on paper. Clark's formal training as a
commercial artist, specifically, in graphic design, brought
discipline and confidence to an innate artistic ability.
In addition, her other career, as a farrier, has given
her an understanding of the physiology of the horse rarely
matched by other equine artists. Constantly seeking to
remain fresh, Clark uses a variety of mediums to express
the subtlety of mood and emotions in her art: pencil and
conte, acrylics, coloured pencil and gouache. Clark's
most recent works have taken a more ethereal, expressionistic
turn. And though she has made her reputation as an equine
artist, she has never been limited to that. Increasingly,
Clark is receiving a large number of commissions to draw
and paint other companion animals. In 1995, her work "Almost
Ready" won first place in the pencil division at
the annual Equine Art Auction, held at the prestigious
Royal Winter Fair. As further indication of the quality
of her work, the piece was promptly bought by one of the
jurors.
Susan
Gordon Richmond, British Columbia
(604) 278-2388
Susan Gordon graduated from Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School
in 1977, at which time she was taking riding lessons with
the late Margaret Ellard in nearby Fish Creek and boarding
her Appaloosa Stallion, Top Canadian, at Spruce Meadows.
In addition to horses, art was Susan's first love and
the teachers at E.P. Scarlett were often frustrated with
her ability to turn almost every assignment into something
to do with horses! After taking art and marketing classes
at Mount Royal College, Susan went to work in the advertising
department at Woodward's, Chinook Center. When she eventually
moved back to B.C., Susan rode and trained event horses,
hunters and jumpers, and continued with advertising and
artwork. After spending the past 14 years in Arizona (12
in Phoenix), Susan now lives in beautiful Sedona and spends
her time teaching dressage and hunt seat equitation, and
painting, of course! Susan's "Pep Talk" being
exhibited at the Fall Classic Breeders' Sale is from a
snapshot taken on one of her recent trips back to the
Spruce Meadows Masters, a place that continues to hold
wonderful memories from her teen years.
Janet
Griffin-Scott Port Hope, Ontario
(905) 786-2963
Janet Griffin-Scott was raised in Midland, Ontario where
she owned and showed Thoroughbreds and Arabians, had a
horse in the backyard, worked on a stud farm after school,
and used to get in trouble with her teachers at school
for drawing horses all over her notebooks! She attended
York University's four-year Graphic Design/Illustration/Photography
program and started her own freelance art business after
graduation. After ten years as a commercial artist, Janet
started an equine and wildlife art gallery and framing
business in her home/studio. She published "Equine
Art News" for five years, all the while organizing
several equine art auctions and shows at Toronto's Quarterama
and the Royal Winter Fair. She has also shown her artwork
at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibit, Equitana in Louisville,
KY, in Long Island, at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Festival,
the Cobourg Waterfront Festival, Art in the Park Uxbridge
and Oshawa, and at the Great North East Wildlife Festival
in Niagara Falls, New York. Janet's work has also appeared
in numerous magazines, newspapers, and on Greeting Cards.
Her commissioned portraits have been very successful,
with over 200 completed portraits to date. The number
of stores that carry her art, cards, and giftware is counted
at 650 in Canada, US, the UK, Switzerland, Germany and
Denmark. Janet works with meticulous detail in acrylic,
oil, pencil, pencil crayon, charcoal and pen-and-ink,
but her favorite media by far is watercolour.
In 2000, Janet realized a lifetime dream of living on
a farm and caring for her own horses. She and her husband
James have two children and, on their ten acres they have
Cinnamon, her two month old colt Billy, Jake, a two year
old Quarter horse and Risky, Janet's 20 year old retired
competitive trail racing and hunter horse.

Judy Wood Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
(306) 373-6007
Judy Wood is an established equine artist (and Canadian
Warmblood owner) based in Saskatoon. A specialist in realistic
original design work, she has become well known for her
animal work, particularly dogs and horses, although she
is interested in all aspects of the natural world. Other
subject matter portrayed in her work includes rodeo and
working cowboys, Native people, both contemporary and
historic, polo, racehorse and carousel art. For the past
several years, Judy has worked primarily in the medium
of glass mosaic. This allows her to do the highly detailed
work she enjoys, while at the same time producing a virtually
non-breakable, unfading work of wall art. Mosaic has a
tradition going back over four thousand years, and is
one of the classic art media now enjoying a revival. Her
other media include, but are not limited to, collage,
painted tiles and cast relief works, all on an equine
theme---all breeds, all disciplines. Judy shows regularly
at the Spruce Meadows Equi-fair (during the Masters tournament),
and her works have been accepted into the American Association
of Equine Artists fall shows in Kentucky. Her mosaic works
have been featured in several British and American mosaic
books, and in equine art magazines in the US. Examples
of Judy's works can be seen on her website www.glasswoodstudio.com
or by emailing the artist and inquiring to see the latest.
Joanne
Metz-Laberge Cover Artist Medicine Hat, Alberta
(403) 529-9344
Joanne Metz-Laberge has created hundreds of pastel and
ink drawings. A tightly-cropped, large-format pastel image
featuring horses relaxing is her signature style. The
attention to detail is instantly apparent and brings the
equine images alive. Some of her pastel images are available
as posters and commissioned pieces grace private collections
as far away as Argentina, England and the U.S.A. Raised
on the family farm near Medicine Hat, Metz-Laberge remembers
summers astride her white pony and schooldays dreaming
and doodling horses. Art school followed, as well as showing
her Saddlebred mare. This horse crazy girl matured into
an accomplished rider, breeder and artist. She remains
in Medicine Hat, living on 10 acres with her husband Ron,
school age son and daughter, and seven horses. The whole
family participates in rearing foals and tending to the
horses. The herd is varied, consisting of a Saddlebred,
a Quarterhorse pony, two Welsh hunter ponies, an Oldenburg
mare with her Premium daughter, and the most recent addition,
a Canadian Warmblood colt by E.R. The summer is busy with
breeding schedules, travel to horse shows and accompanying
Ron to drag car races where he fills his need for speed.
Joanne is pursuing the raising of Warmbloods from a small
select band of Premium and Main mare book mares. Winter
is time for artwork. Each room seems to house its own
art project. Joanne spends time in her studio capturing
the images with pastel crayons. She prefers to work on
large textured stock, perhaps 30 x 40 inches. At any given
time she has many projects on the go, ranging from quilting
to sculpture. If she is relaxing in front of the TV, you
will often find her creating pointillism drawings (an
intricate arrangement of tiny dots) with pen and ink.
These smaller drawings are featured on greeting cards.
Joanne¹s passion for everything equine shines. Her
acute knowledge of horse habits and conformation is evident
in her art. For more information she can be contacted
at jlaberge@canopycanada.net
