2004 CWHBA – ALBERTA
Press Release
FALL CLASSIC BREEDERS’ SALE

Celebrates 10th Anniversary

October 10, 2004

The 10th anniversary of the Fall Classic Breeders’ Sale set new records yet again.  Opening with Auctioneer Don Raffan trotting into the ring on horseback to introduce his ring men, new enthusiasm and bidding energy set the tone of the day.  Indicators of the strong demand include a new high sale average of $9966, up $443 over 2003, and the average for performance horses at $14,935, up $4,614 over 2003.  The auction achieved total gross sales of $418,575 Cdn.

The gala evening featured Sale alumni and sires of consigned horses.  A wonderful and entertaining presentation of driving by Bill Mowatt and his four-in-hand, with two Sale alumni in the hitch, started the evening.  Other horses from past Sales included:  hunter champion Paris with Rodney Tullock; jumper MJ Atlanta with Andrew Moore; Ramona with Rodney Tullock; Mystic Impression with Jill Macleod; Velvet Touch with Jennifer Schmidt; DR Sultan with Kathy Playdon.  The Young Horse Invitational Three Bars, now offering more than $2,000 in prizes, was co-sponsored by Watcher Farms for the Championship Cooler and deGroot Western Art, who donated fine art prints for the top three horses.  This highly competitive class was won by Beda Watcher aboard Churchill, clearing the 5’6” top bar to take the class.

There was a tie for the prestigious position of high selling horse in Section B (Performance Horses and Two-Year-Old Prospects) at the price of $30,000.  The elegant three-year-old son of Consul, CWHBA registered Ultrasonic, bred and consigned by Bruce and Sharon Telford of Woodlawn Farms, was purchased by Paula Abbott of Calgary, who received the high seller’s cooler donated by Woodlawn Farms.  The jumping specialist, four-year-old CWHBA licensed Hannoverian registered stallion Tom Sawyer, also received the high bid of $30,000.

Tom Sawyer, a son of Tannenhain, was bred and consigned by Barbara Beckman of Manitoba, and was purchased by Jillian Carr of Calgary, who received the high seller’s cooler from New House Farm.

The Section A (Broodmares, Weanlings, and Yearlings) high selling horse brought $9,500.  The flashy colt Just In Time by Timebreaker was bred and consigned by Doreen Orr and purchased by Richard Voyer of Calgary, who received the high seller’s cooler donated by Bioniche.  The consigners of all three of the high selling horses each received a lovely set of horse head bookends donated by The Tack Corral.

The Sale consistently sees buyers from all over Canada and the USA, and 2004 was no exception.  We welcomed first time sale buyer Robert Williams of Navan, Ontario who, realizing the great potential and bargains available here in the west, went home with a trailer load of six lovely horses.  More horses sold in the higher price groups, and less in the $1,000-$4,999 range than in any past sales.  The impact of BSE was felt on the Sale in the yearlings, as the majority of these were not sold.  Despite a high Canadian Dollar and competitive bidding by Canadians, 15 horses have found new homes in the USA, and we welcome and thank our American bidders.

At the 10-year mark, the Fall Classic Breeders’ Sale has sustained it’s title as the Premier Warmblood Sale in Canada.
